Traveling to a mountain reserve requires planning, but families can enjoy Tara National Park safely. The park provides wide gravel paths, picnic areas, and accessible landmarks that do not require strenuous hiking.
What are the best viewpoints for children?
Osluša is the most family-friendly viewpoint in the park.
The Osluša overlook requires only a 30 to 45-minute visit. It features a flat approach, wooden benches, and safe observation areas. Families with young children or limited mobility can access it easily without steep climbs.
Where else can families go without heavy hiking?
Zaovine Lake and the roadside medieval tombstones are easy stops.
During summer, Zaovine Lake provides calm areas for swimming. If your family enjoys history, the Stećci tombstones at Perućac and Rastište sit right off the main road. The Vrelo River, which is exactly 365 meters long, offers a flat 45-minute walk ending at a waterfall.

How should families get around the park?
Driving a rental car is the best way to navigate the park with children.
Public transport inside the park is extremely limited. Having your own vehicle allows you to drive directly to trailheads and visitor centers. The drive from Belgrade takes 3.5 to 4 hours. Download offline maps before arriving, as mobile signals drop frequently in the canyons.
Is the park safe for kids with brown bears present?
Yes, as long as you stay on the 290 km of marked trails.
Tara holds the largest brown bear population in Serbia, with 40 to 50 individuals. Bears generally avoid populated trails and viewpoints. Keep children close, do not hike into unpopulated forests off-trail, and pack a bear bell if you walk in dense woodland areas.

What should we pack for a family day trip?
Bring layers, sturdy shoes, and plenty of snacks and water.
- Daypack with offline maps downloaded on your phone
- Plenty of drinking water and snacks (amenities are sparse)
- Rain jacket and layered clothing for changing mountain weather
- Sun protection for exposed viewpoints
How much does park entry cost for a family?
There is no entrance fee on foot; cars pay a daily vehicle fee from 300 RSD.
You pay this standard fee for general access to the viewpoints and lakes. Read more about the Entry Fee Costs to understand potential extra costs for specific guided tours or fishing permits.
